Mountaineers Tripped up by NOC-Tonkawa

The Mountaineer men's soccer team once again put together a solid first half; going into the break tied with NOC-Tonkawa at 0-0 before suffering a defeat at home in their 2019 Region 2 opener.

A penalty kick midway through the second half proved to be enough to put NOC-Tonkawa over the top as they would pick up 2 late goals to clinch a 3-0 victory despite a back and forth game with Eastern pressuring until the very end.

The Mountaineers dropped to 2-3, 0-1 in the Region II Conference.

PLAY BY PLAY

- NOC-Tonkawa went up for good on a PK midway through the second half.

- NOC-Tonkawa added 2 goals late, both goals coming off deflections on counter attacks as Eastern was pressuring to get back in the game.

Coach Jon Evan commented:

"Our team played hard until the end but it just wasn't good enough tonight.  We had the game where we wanted it at the half but we need to learn to do it for 90 minutes," Evan said. "Tonkawa deserve credit for taking advantage of our miscommunications at the back and for the extra effort they gave to close out the game. We will have to learn to do this ourselves if we want to get results.  Fortunately, there's a long way to go and Region 2 looks to be a tight race this year so we will get back to work and try to get better before our next time out."

GAME NOTES

- The Mountaineers took 12 shots placing 3 on frame.

- Carlos Roberto Dias Neto had 5 saves in the contest.

Eastern returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 19th at 5:00 p.m. at home vs NEO.
