Eastern Women’s Basketball Wins Second Straight NJCAA Region 2 Championship

WILBURTON, Okla. – The Eastern Oklahoma State College women's basketball team earned a share of the NJCAA Region 2 championship with its 75-47 win over Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College Saturday.

With a conference record of 14-2 (23-5 overall), Eastern earned a tie for first place in the region with Murray State College. This makes back-to-back women's basketball regular-season titles for Eastern.

Head Coach Al Davis, who is in his second year at Eastern, said he is proud of his team's commitment during a condensed season because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I am very proud of our team for accomplishing this goal," said Head Coach Al Davis. "It has been a long year, but they have found a way to play together when every team we play brings their best game. Our job is not finished yet. We have to go on the road and win three games in four days for a chance to get back to nationals. We still can play at a higher level on both ends of the floor. If we are 100 percent focused, I believe we will have a great chance of achieving another goal of ours."

The Lady Mountaineers recorded two separate 8-game winning streaks and lost only two conference games all season to finish at the top of the standings.

Sophomore guard Shanequa Henry earned Region 2 Player of the Year and was named 1st Team All-Region. Sophomore forward Crystal Ortiz was named 2nd Team All-Region.

Lady Mountaineer Head Coach Al Davis was named Region 2 Coach of the Year after just his third season with the program.

The Lady Mountaineers have earned six Region 2 Player of the Week honors so far this season. Shanequa Henry earned the recognition five times and Crystal Ortiz was honored once.

The NJCAA Region II Conference Tournament is set to begin on Wednesday, March 2 at Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee. The Lady Mountaineers will need to win the Region II Tournament to advance to the NJCAA National Tournament in Lubbock, Texas.
